World D0: Start Here

Say hello: docker version

You will learn: how to check that both halves of Docker, the client and the engine, are ready.

Checked with Docker Engine 29 on 31 Oct 2026

The problem

You installed Docker. But is it really awake? How do you check?

Pick one answer.

Try it

Type docker version. It asks Docker to say hello.

Your laptop~

  • No open hatches

Lunchboxes (containers)

  • No containers yet

Frozen packs (images)

  • No images yet

0 containers (0 running), 0 images, 0 lockers.

Watch

Docker has two halves. The client: The part you talk to: the docker command. It takes your order to the engine. is the docker command: the waiter who takes your order. The server is the engine: the cook. Tap both halves.

Tap the line that starts each half.

Watch

With the engine stopped, docker version prints the Client half, then: Cannot connect to the Docker daemon. Docker transcript: $ docker version Client: Docker Engine - Community Version: 29.9.2 API version: 1.56 Go version: go1.26.10 Git commit: a82e528 Built: Tue Oct 20 18:44:40 2026 OS/Arch: linux/amd64 Context: default Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?

The engine waits in the background as a daemon: A program that waits in the background for work. Docker's daemon is called dockerd. called dockerd. No daemon, no cooking. Here the client answers, but the server half fails.

Predict

The Client half answers. The Server half says Cannot connect to the Docker daemon. Is Docker installed?

Pick one answer.

Check

Client or server? Sort each job.

Drag a card into a box. Or tap the card, then tap the box.

      You did it!

You can now check that Docker’s client and engine are both ready.

      Go deeper (optional)

docker info shows more: how many containers and images you have. docker --version prints just the client version on one line. The client can even send orders to an engine on another computer.

Real rep (optional): run docker version on your own computer. Do both halves show the same version number?
