Install Git

You will learn: how to install Git on your own computer and check that it works.

The problem

A terminal shows one line: git version 2.56.0. Terminal output: git version 2.56.0

This line means Git is installed. Does your own computer show it yet? Let’s find out.

Try it

Type git --version here first. It asks Git for its version number.

Try it

Pick your computer. Do each step, then tick it.

Which computer do you use?

Watch

pwd and ls work in Git Bash, just like in the practice terminal. Terminal output: $ pwd /home/you $ ls Documents Music notes.txt

On Windows, use Git Bash. It comes with Git. pwd, ls and cd work there, just like here.

Predict

You type git --version. The terminal says command not found. What does that mean?

Pick one answer.

Check

You just installed Git. Your old terminal still says command not found. What do you try first?

Pick one answer.

You did it!

You can now install Git and check it with git --version.

Go deeper (optional)

Prefer typing? On Windows, winget install --id Git.Git -e --source winget installs Git. On a Mac with Homebrew, use brew install git. To update Git later, install it again the same way.
