World K1: The Food Court · Boss challenge

Grand opening

You will learn: to start a kind cluster, put out a pod, and read its status 3 ways.

Checked with Kubernetes 1.37 on 31 Oct 2026

The problem

Boss: grand opening day! Your first stall opens today. Where do you rehearse first?

Pick one answer.

Try it

Room 1: open the food court. Build the command for a cluster called dev, with the 3-stall file.

Tap the pieces in the right order.

…

Watch

bash
kind create cluster --name dev --config kind-dev.yaml
Creating cluster "dev" ...
✓ Ensuring node image (kindest/node:v1.37.0) 🖼
✓ Preparing nodes 📦 📦 📦
✓ Writing configuration 📜
✓ Starting control-plane 🕹️
✓ Installing CNI 🔌
✓ Installing StorageClass 💾
✓ Joining worker nodes 🚜
Set kubectl context to "kind-dev"
You can now use your cluster with:
kubectl cluster-info --context kind-dev
Have a nice day! 👋
kind creates the cluster dev, ticks every step, and sets the kubectl context to kind-dev.

kind printed this. Find the green line: kubectl now points at kind-dev. Your pink bar will say the same.

Try it

Room 2: put out your first tray. Apply tray.yaml, then wait until it says Running.

You are here: cluster kind-dev namespace default
Stalls: 3. Trays: 0 (0 ready). Waiting for a stall: 0.

dev-worker2Open

Time: +0s (sped up)

Predict

Your tray shows 0/1 ContainerCreating. Is something broken?

Pick one answer.

Try it

Room 3: read the tray’s status 3 ways. First kubectl get pod tray. Then kubectl describe pod tray. Last, kubectl get pod tray -o yaml.

You are here: cluster kind-dev namespace default
Stalls: 3. Trays: 1 (1 ready). Waiting for a stall: 0.

Check

Which way shows it best? Sort each one.

Drag a card into a box. Or tap the card, then tap the box.

        Try it

Final room, for real: open your own food court on your laptop.

        Real mission

        1. kind create cluster --name dev --config kind-dev.yaml
        2. kubectl config current-context
        3. kubectl run tray --image=nginx:1.29-alpine
        4. kubectl wait --for=condition=Ready pod/tray --timeout=60s
        5. kubectl get pod tray
        6. kubectl describe pod tray
        7. kubectl get pod tray -o yaml
        8. kind delete cluster --name dev

0 of 8 steps done · Your ticks are saved.

        You did it!

You can now open a cluster, run a pod and check it 3 ways.
